Medical Waivers for Window Tinting
Please be sure to obtain the medical authorization before adding the sun-shading or tinting to your vehicle.
DMV issues waivers to individuals with medical conditions that require protection from sunlight or bright artificial light. The waiver authorizes the individuals to equip their vehicles regularly used to transport them with window tinting films or applications. Waivers are issued in the name of the person with the condition and are valid as long as the person has the condition or until the vehicle is sold. It is very important to obtain the waiver before adding the sun-shading or tinting.
Applying for a Waiver To apply for a waiver, the person with the medical condition must submit a completed Sun-Shading Medical Waiver Application (MED-20) to DMV, Medical Review Services. Mail this form to P. O. Box 27412, Richmond, Virginia 23269. You may also fax it to (804) 367-1604. Upon receipt, the application will be reviewed by DMV Medical Review Services. The application must include vehicle information and a statement from a physician/nurse practitioner certifying that sun shading is necessary for the individual's health. The vehicle owner will receive a new registration card with "sun shading" printed in the Special Conditions space. This registration card serves as verification that the vehicle is authorized to have sun shading. Great! You have just schedule an appointment to get your car windows tinted and you might have been wondering what the process is be like. Well, we have created this section you know what to expect when getting your car windows tinted.
Before Your Appointment
We have been asked many times if it is necessary to have the car windows cleaned before window film installation. Don't worry! There is no need to clean your windows before your appointment. We take care of the cleaning and preparation for installation. In order to accomplish a perfect window tint job, we need to make sure your windows are 100% clean before we install the film in your car.
Also, we've noticed that many of our customers wash their cars before the appointment. Although is good for the car to be free of dust before installation, we recommend to have your car washed after the installation. In the process of installation, we spray a water/soap solution mix that gets to the paint too. After window film installation, we do not wipe clean the paint in order to stay away from scratching your car's paint. Pretty much, you don't have to worry about much before your appointment to get your windows tinted. The only thing you can do for us is have your car free of belongings and/or child seats. When we install window film to the back window, we need as much space as possible to work. For this, we move the seats all the way to the front and flip them down. At The Time of Your Appointment
The time has come to get your car windows tinted. Right before we start working on your car, we talk about the different window film shades and colors for you to make a decision. We highly recommend keeping your windows in accordance with the window tinting laws of your state.
Also, a quick inspection to your car has to be performed. We look for scratches on the paint and windows, damages to your car's interior and electronic and mechanical malfunctions. If during the installation we find an issue with your car, you will be notified immediately. You will be asked for your car keys. In order to cut and install the window film, we need to roll your car windows up and down for what we will need to have your car's switch on. Installation Preparation
Installation is performed by one or two installer and takes between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on the type of vehicle.
We turn your car's switch on in order to have power to roll the windows up and down. When we do this, we make sure the exterior lights, radio and AC are turned off. We'll keep your car's switch on for as long as the installation of the side windows is completed which usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes. First, we clean all the windows on the outside. Although window film is always installed on the inside of the windows, we place the window film on the outside of the windows and we cut the film to the shape of each window by hand. The blades we use are specially designed for window tinting and will not scratch the glass. Dot Matrix Some car models have windows with a raised, black-colored dot matrix pattern painted on the glass, usually in a wide area at the top of the back window, which are in five to six inch rows. This black paint dotted area rises up from the glass pushing the window film up making it hard for the window film to reach the glass between these dots leaving air pockets and looking messy and discolored. There are only a few ways to resolve this problem which will increase the price for window film installation. One is adding a black vinyl strip on the dot-matrix. This method would black out the area as will block your vision a bit. Vinyl won't peel and can be removed easily. Other solution is trimming the window film off the dot matrix area leaving this area with no film at all. Rubber Seals There is a rubber seal on the outside and inside right at the bottom of the window hole. This rubber seal holds each window when you roll them up and down. In order to leave no gap at the top and bottom of the window, we need to remove the inside rubber seal and then place it back on after installation. For this, sometimes it is necessary to remove the whole panel. Many car models come with an extra little window in the back side windows. Sometimes, these little windows are hold by a rubber seal that leaves no space to work around the edges. For this, we have to trim about 1/8 of an inch all around this rubber seal in order to take the film a little further than the window pattern so there is no gap around the edges. Cleaning The side windows are washed from the inside with a scrub pad and water/soap solution. Right after, they are washed again with the same solution, only that this time, we slide a razor blade to clean the window surface. The back window and any window with defroster or antenna cannot be cleaned with a razor blade. To clean this windows, we use an ammonia based solution and a scrub pad. All stickers will be removed unless otherwise requested. Some stickers can be saved, such as parking stickers, state inspection stickers. See Stickers & Previous Tint. 3rd Brake Light The 3rd brake light comes inside the back window in many car models, either at the top or at the bottom of the window. When this is the case, we have to trim just enough so this 3rd brake light is 100% bright when the brake paddle is pressed for state inspection purposes, and of course, safety. It is not necessary to trim this 3rd brake light pattern, if the car has this 3rd brake light in a spoiler or trunk. Once all side window patterns are cut, and the rubber seals have been taken care of and the windows are clean, the installation begins. Stickers & Previous TintStickers Before the windows are cleaned, all stickers must be removed. Stickers will be removed and saved if possible by the customer’s request. If you are getting your front windshield done, we will remove carefully the inspection sticker and stick it back on after the installation. Then, every time you take your car to get the inspection, you will have to remove the sticker before taking it to the inspector or ask the inspector to remove it carefully, which won’t be hard to do. The smoothness of the window film surface will make it easy to remove. Parking stickers will also be removed. Most parking stickers are easy to remove and able to save for re-installation. Though, some parking stickers are very old and get cracked up, which will make it impossible to remove safely. If this is the case, you will have to get a new parking sticker. Previous Tint Window film can be very hard to remove if you don’t have the right tools and the patience to do it. When old tint is removed, most times the film comes right off, but many times the glue stays on which is the hardest part. To remove the glue, usually a razor blade and a water and soap solution will do the job. But for windows with defroster or antennas, the use of a razor is not possible, as this will damage these devices. When this is the case, we apply other techniques that require ammonia based solutions, scrub pads and lots of patience. Although window tint removal is expensive, we highly recommend letting the professionals take care of it. Glue residue counts as tint removal and fees will apply. If you decide to do it yourself, you might save some bucks and you might be able to do it right. But if glue residue stays on the window, this will show after the window film is installed and won’t be covered by the installation warranty. Factory tint cannot be removed since the glass itself is already dark. This is the case for the rear area of most trucks (SUVs and pick up trucks), some station wagons and sport vans. After Installation Has Been Completed
When we are done installing the window film to your car, we put everything back together and make sure everything works properly (handles, locks, switches and brake lights). Also, we inspect the installation and double check for bubbles and imperfections.
You will notice water stains on your car's paint, that for your paint's protection we won't wipe off. We recommend you to wash it as soon as possible after installation if your car is exposed to the sun heat. We will inspect the car again and agree that the car is in the same conditions than before we started the installation. You will be provided with your invoice and a warranty card from our window film manufacturer. Also, you will be explained about our warranty policy and window tint care and maintenance. Congratulations! You can now enjoy of the benefits of having window film installed on your car windows. We are sure you will be very happy with it! Window Tinting Care & Maintenance
DO NOT roll windows down for 2 to 3 days after installation.
DO NOT clean windows for 14 days. This will allow time for the film adhesive to cure. Dry out period Once window film has been installed, it’s very common to see a slight haziness and/or small water pockets. This is a normal part of the adhesive bonding process called "curing". Depending on the film type and weather conditions, it may take up to 30 days for the film to be fully cured. The curing process is slow because the remaining water used in installation must evaporate through the film. Sputtered and heavy security films take the longest to dry and will take longer for any hazy appearance to disappear. Continuing care Once the film is dry and cured, it’s then safe for the film to be cleaned. The best cleaner is a simple solution of water and a small amount of soap. Clean the window and then squeegee dry with overlapping strokes in the same way you would clean the outside of your car windows. You may also clean the film surface with any normal strength glass cleaner. Products with ammonia will not damage the film if used in reasonable quantities and if the film is not left to soak in it. Do not use any abrasive cleaners, industrial strength glass cleaners and/or any other window cleaning tools that may scratch the window film. Remember, the surface of the film is coated with a scratch resistant not scratch proof coating. FAQ's
• What is window film?
Technically consist in the application of a high resistance polyester film that is stuck to the inside face of the glass, whatever the size is. • How long does it take to install film on my car? It all depends on the number of windows that need tint as well as the type of car. As long as you use a qualified, professional window film installer, the job will usually take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. • Is automotive window film installed on the inside or the outside of the glass? Window film is always applied to the inside of the automotive glass. Installers simply use the outside of the window to cut & heat shrink the window film for a proper fit. • What film is legal for my car? Laws pertaining to how dark you can tint your car windows vary from state to state and country to country. Check your state or country where your car is registered to find out applicable tint laws. Check out the latest automotive window tinting laws for all states in the US. • Will window film stop all interior fading? No. Window film will not completely eliminate fading from occurring. Depending on the type of window film that is applied, window film can reduce fading by up to 70%. It’s important to note there are multiple causes for fading – UV rays, solar heat and visible light and window film can combat all of these threats. • Will window film damage my residential dual pane windows? As long as your professional installer uses the right type of window film, your dual pane windows should not be affected. • Does security film prevent the glass from breaking? No. Security film does an excellent job at holding broken glass together but it cannot prevent the window from breaking if it comes in contact with a severe force (e.g. hurricane, baseball bat blow). • Is it possible to tint acrylic or plexiglass? No. This type of materials get off gas for their entire lives, what makes window film impossible to stay still without bubbling. |
